The American Indian College Fund understands that each American Indian is on a unique journey to complete their education and start a career that benefits their families and their communities. We also understand that for many of our students, success is often tied to honoring their culture and heritage throughout their journey. This report details the overall school experience for American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian students. Included are discussions of the Native student and information about where Native students live and attend school. Because defining the Native student is difficult, many rely on federal recognition to identify them. The College Fund launched the program to meet the needs of tribal communities and in response to the college-going and completion crisis amongst Native American and Alaska Native students. Research shows the national rate of all students going to college within six months of graduating from high school is 70%. AMERICAN INDIAN COLLEGE FUND- Newsletter Special Edition- Summer The college fund has recently launched a new Public Service Campaign to share the staggering statistic that less than 1% of college students are American Indian. During our first 25 years, your gifts have empowered the American Indian College Fund to support tens of thousands.
American Indian college, were surveyed both at the beginning of the fall semester and at the end of the semester following contact with American Indian counselors through campus activities and in a freshman orientation course. The Bureau of Indian Education has a list of scholarships and grants available to Native American students as well, such as the American Indian College Fund. If you are a Native American who has student loans, you’re in the same boat as thousands of other Americans looking into debt repayment and forgiveness. Special Needs Students with special needs are protected by federal laws that are aimed at improving their educational outcomes. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) supports state and local education systems' efforts to protect the rights and meet the needs of children with disabilities. • The number of American Indian/Alaska Native students enrolled in colleges and universities more than doubled in the past 30 years, along with the number of associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees conferred to Natives over the past 25 Size: KB.
2 This needs assessment focused on federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes. It did not include either Native Hawaiians or indigenous peoples from the American Territories since they are not federally recognized tribes. For a list of federally recognized tribes, please see Federal Register Notice Vol Number. The American Indian College Fund was awarded a Top Workplaces honor by The Denver Post. Located just north of downtown Denver, Colorado, this education non-profit serving Native American college students for 30 years was ranked number 32 of 65 of Denver’s top Creating Visibility and Healthy Learning Environments for Native Americans. During the study abroad-structured semester offered at Crazy Horse Memorial's Indian University of North America, students will enroll in credit hours of college courses studying natural resource management, global food systems, leadership and Native American studies, and they will conduct a research project throughout the semester. Native American students are an underrepresented minority group in higher education, representing less than 1% of all college-going students in the United States (Ginder & Kelly-Reid, ). Although they represent a small proportion of the college student population in the United States, it is important to research Native American students’ experiences in higher education.
